Abstract

Agricultural advisory services play a crucial role in equipping farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their farms effectively in a rapidly changing agricultural landscape. Over time, these services evolved from traditional public-sector technology transfer to include diverse stakeholders such as private firms, NGOs and farmer groups. Farm management extension now integrates financial, market and resource management support, enabling smallholder farmers to improve profitability and sustainability. Advisory services also facilitate linkages between farmers and markets, strengthening value chains and fostering business-oriented approaches to agriculture. However, challenges like limited funding, capacity gaps and the accessibility of services to smallholders, persist. Innovative models, including digital tools, participatory training and partnerships between public and private actors, are increasingly shaping the future of extension. A well-structured and responsive advisory system is essential to ensure that smallholder farmers receive relevant, practical support to navigate market complexities, optimize resources and enhance resilience.
