Abstract

Smallholder family farmers play a crucial role in food security and rural economies but face increasing challenges from market volatility, climate change and resource constraints. Strengthening their position requires a shift toward business-oriented farming, supported by financial management, value chain integration and entrepreneurial capacity-building. Advisory services, digital tools and cooperative structures help farmers enhance productivity, mitigate risks and increase profitability. Youth engagement is essential to this transformation, as young professionals bring technological expertise, innovative thinking and business acumen to farming and agribusiness services. Investing in training, finance, and market access enables smallholders to move beyond subsistence and actively shape agricultural value chains. As small farms consolidate and adopt commercial models, professional farm management support will become increasingly vital. By fostering resilience, sustainability and inclusive growth, farm business management can empower smallholder farmers to navigate modern agricultural challenges and secure long-term economic viability.
