Tailoring the high-temperature wear behaviour of laminated A1100/Mg-9Li-1Zn/AA1100 via severe plastic deformation
Abstract
This work investigates the high-temperature tribological behaviour of the AA1100/Mg-9Li-1Zn/AA1100 multilayered composite fabricated through severe plastic deformation (SPD). The SPD was executed utilising the Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) methodology. The ARB was conducted at room temperature without any thermal treatment between passes. To assess the wear properties of produced composites, dry sliding wear tests were performed at 100°C, 200°C, and 300°C under a consistent applied load of 10 N. The mechanical test specimens underwent annealing under identical conditions (time and duration) to those of the wear test samples for the purpose of analysing microstructural and mechanical characteristics. The highest UTS of 310.5 MPa was achieved for the sixth pass heat-treated at 100°C. However, elongation decreased to 4.8% in cost of increased strength. The findings revealed that at 100°C, the sixth pass composite exhibited superior wear resistance compared to the second and fourth passes. Furthermore, the wear performance significantly declined as the test temperature increased. At 200°C and 300°C, the processed composites encountered pronounced wear. Hence, an increase in temperature governs the mechanisms of severe adhesion and plastic deformation wear.
