Abstract

This study focuses on temperature measurements made within a small-scale optically accessible solid fuel ramjet test facility. Flame luminescence was collected onto a single monochrome camera using a custom view-multiplication and filter configuration to evaluate instantaneous flame temperatures using the two-color pyrometry method. A sensitivity study was performed using various assumptions of soot emissivity and total measurement uncertainty was estimated. Accompanying wall-resolved large-eddy simulations of the burner were performed to determine the effects of chemistry closure and model dimensionality on temperature prediction accuracy. Instantaneous and average experimental measurements and numerical simulations show very good agreement in the prediction of flame temperature and structure. The results provide novel insight into the turbulent flame structure within SFRJ engines through direct comparison of experiment and simulation.
