Abstract

This article explores the evolution of cartographic representations in Romanian, Hungarian, and Ukrainian lower secondary geography textbooks during post-socialist and post-Soviet transformations. Through a comparative content analysis of 21 textbooks published between the 1990s and 2020s, the study highlights significant shifts in visual content, with a notable increase in photographs and a concerning decline in cartographic rigour. Findings reveal persistent challenges in integrating meaningful and diverse cartographic representations that foster spatial thinking. The article calls for renewed attention to map skills in geography education, particularly within the evolving digital landscape of geoinformation.
