Abstract

The Bilberry Experiment was part of an art-based action research project that explored the use of natural pigments for science education at a primary school in Lapland, Finland. The experiment utilised bilberry soup to demonstrate the dynamic colour changes of anthocyanins under different pH conditions. Through observing these changes and transforming them into visual artworks, pupils engaged in both scientific inquiry and creative expression, fostering emerging science as their curiosity and observation evolved into experiential learning. The experiment supported pupils in developing observational skills, curiosity, and emerging understandings of chemical phenomena, particularly the role of natural pigments as acid – base indicators. The study highlights the potential of natural materials to facilitate interdisciplinary learning experiences that connect scientific experimentation with artistic interpretation. The findings contribute to ongoing discussions on integrating art and science in Arctic education. It highlights the potential of interdisciplinary learning to foster creativity and curiosity in education.
