The British National (Overseas) visa: impacts and implications for the United Kingdom
Abstract
The British National (Overseas) visa scheme, launched in 2021, addresses Hong Kong’s political situation following the National Security Law. With over 216,000 visas granted by December 2024, this article examines the scheme’s impacts on the United Kingdom, analysing integration challenges, economic contributions and evolving policy responses in the United Kingdom. Drawing on recent research with Hong Kong migrants, the study proposes policy refinements to enhance integration outcomes, address security concerns and honour historical commitments. It acknowledges complex migration motivations beyond political factors, including economic opportunities and educational aspirations, providing a nuanced understanding of this significant population movement and its implications for British society.
