Abstract

As the world becomes more reliant on data and computational tools, it is essential to equip students with an understanding of big data and how to leverage it effectively. Building such knowledge and skills ensures that students are prepared to navigate real-world applications of data science and utilize its potential to advance scientific inquiry. The application of data science to traditional sciences offers tremendous opportunities to foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among researchers while enabling them to drive meaningful advancements in a data-driven world. This article presents a detailed lesson plan for high school chemistry students designed to introduce them to the ways data scientists work with raw data to extract meaningful insights through descriptive and predictive analyses. Utilizing the Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP), students explore datasets about “alien elements,” uncovering patterns and trends to construct their own periodic table. By applying data analysis skills in a project setting, students better understand the patterns of the periodic table compared to rote memorization. By integrating data science into the chemistry curriculum, this lesson plan aims to inspire students to understand the breadth of science-related careers beyond basic research.
