Three-dimensional yarn-level simulation of weft knitted garment using stitch-mesh modelling and space transformation
Abstract
Recent simulation techniques perform yarn-level simulation of knitted garments, but realistic and efficient simulation remains challenging. This paper proposes a modeling technique and spatial transformation to achieve rapid yarn-based knitwear simulation. Firstly, the stitch-mesh model is established, which contains the stitch-mesh points and the data points that control the shape of the loop. Furthermore, the relationship between knitting process data and stitch meshes is established. Then, the stitch meshes of the two-dimensional (2D) garment pieces are calculated according to the garment pattern and knitting process data. The proposed method transforms planar stitch-mesh points into stitch-mesh points in a three-dimensional (3D) space according to the spatial transformation relationship between 2D and 3D clothing used in clothing simulation. The relationships between stitch-mesh points (SMPs) and data points of the stitch-mesh model are established. The coordinates of the loop data points are calculated according to the 3D stitch meshes, and the 3D yarn-level loop structure is generated. Finally, the 3D simulation of a variety of knitted garments is shown, and the simulation efficiency is analyzed. It is confirmed that the developed method is capable of simulating yarn-level knitted garments with high efficiency.
