Abstract

This article problematizes the importance of scholarly public engagement in the salient case of misinformation. The article proposes a two-part approach for scholars to advance both explicit and tacit knowledge. First, scholars can create research-based, education-oriented materials in accessible formats like explainer videos and infographics to directly provide the public with the tools to identify misinformation. Second, scholars can develop participatory tools and workshops to advance tacit knowledge, which is learned through ‘doing.’ This includes but is not limited to creating online courses, interactive games, and simulations where users can practice identifying and debunking misinformation using digital verification tools in a safe environment. By adopting these proactive measures, scholars can help build public resilience and critical media literacy in an era of increasing misinformation and authoritarianism.
