Abstract

This research reflection examines dairy farming through the combined lenses of Serious Leisure Perspective (SLP) and the psychological construct of grit, situating dairying within the concept of agrileisure. It argues that dairy farming, though culturally necessary, exhibits the hallmarks of serious leisure—while grit functions as the mechanism that sustains long-term engagement. Drawing from the literature, this reflection highlights how perseverance of effort and consistency of interest reinforce the progression from novice to expert within agricultural “leisure careers.” Work on agrileisure expands this understanding by showing how farming can serve both livelihood and lifestyle functions, offering meaning and community connection beyond financial returns. A conceptual model joins serious leisure, agrileisure, and grit to identify measurable variables for empirical study and suggests approaches that integrate disciplines. By reframing dairy farming as a hybrid work–leisure domain, the reflection invites scholars to expand their scope to include participation across diverse leisure contexts.
