Abstract

Despite knowing the importance of understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying leisure behavior in later life, little is known about how future time perspective (FTP) and leisure motivation merge together. This study employed a latent profile analysis to identify patterns of FTP and leisure motivation among Korean baby boomers. Data from 452 adults revealed five patterns: limited FTP/lowest motivation, limited FTP/low-to-moderate motivation, balanced FTP/moderate motivation, limited FTP/moderately high motivation, and opportunity FTP/highest motivation. Profiles with higher motivation levels demonstrated more extensive leisure participation and broader social engagement, regardless of the temporal perspective, whereas leisure and life satisfaction were more strongly associated with expanded FTP profiles. These findings enhance our understanding of the relationship between temporal perspective and leisure motivation in later life, highlighting the importance of tailored interventions to promote leisure participation and well-being among diverse older adults.
