From Norway to Latvia: exploring reasons for return, experiences, and transnational living
Abstract
This article empirically interprets ‘transnational living’ by examining how transnationalism and return migration intersect for Latvian returnees. Norwegian register data shows that 20% of Latvian migrants leave Norway within five years of their initial immigration. Based on biographical interviews, the research analyzes reasons for migration to Norway, returning to Latvia, and transnational return practices. The study reveals that some return migrants maintain transnational professional ties while reintegrating into Latvian society. It is also common for returnees to leverage the social and cultural capital gained in Norway in their professional lives in Latvia.
