Abstract

Drs. Mary E. Brunkow, Frederick J. Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their foundational contributions to the identification of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs), which pioneered the field of Treg cell-mediated peripheral immune tolerance. Their work elucidated the mechanisms by which immune cells are suppressed to prevent autoimmunity and provided critical insights that support the advancement of Treg-based immunotherapeutic strategies for autoimmune diseases. Following an overview of immune tolerance, autoimmunity, and Treg cell-mediated peripheral immune tolerance is a bibliometric analysis of each of this year’s Nobel laureates and their respective scholarly contributions.
