Abstract

The surface of earth receives energy equivalent to 120000 TW/ hr, which is much higher than annual global requirement. The unlimited sunlight and the abundant ocean water chiacked scientists to utilize it for energy production. Photochemical water splitting is an inspiration from the natural photosynthesis. Production of carbohydrate using CO2 during water splitting is one of the most efficient co-factor-based reaction in plants. Incorporating first row transition metals in tailored ligand scaffolds mimic photosynthetic water oxidation catalyst. The review focuses on the chemistry of water-soluble molecular catalysts incorporated with earth abundant metals generating hydrogen in aqueous medium.
