Abstract

The relational nature of therapeutic Residential Childcare is increasingly recognised, yet uncertainty remains surrounding the embodiment of these relationships. This article examines relationship-based practice as an intervention in its own right, drawing on theory, research, and reflective practice within a Residential Childcare setting. Focusing on the adaptation of a monthly ‘letter to the child’ into a more relationally attuned ‘card to the child’, the paper critiques institutionalised, adult led practices that risk reinforcing power imbalances and limiting opportunities for joint experiencing. Through reflective analysis, the card is recognised as a relational ritual that fosters connection, rhythm, and recognition, highlighting the idea that relationship-centred interventions, enacted with intentionality and reflexivity, may support wellbeing and identity development and exemplify the transformative potential of relational practice in Residential Childcare.
