Ageism in Healthcare: Attitudes of Physiotherapists
Abstract
Aims This study examined physiotherapists’ attitudes toward ageism and compared them with non-healthcare professionals (NHPs).Methods A total of 107 physiotherapists and 107 NHPs working with individuals aged ≥65 years participated. Participants completed the Ageism Attitude Scale (AAS; 23–115) and a demographic form. Results Significant differences were found between physiotherapists and NHPs in the Positive Discrimination sub-dimension and in total AAS scores (p < 0.05). Among physiotherapists, qualifications influenced the Limiting the Life of Older Adults sub-dimension (p < 0.05), while no differences were observed in other sub-dimensions or total scores (p > 0.05). Physiotherapists working with older adults had lower total AAS and Limiting the Life of Older Adults scores than those who did not (p < 0.05).Conclusion Both groups showed similar ageism attitudes, but physiotherapists demonstrated more positive views. Their attitudes were shaped by education, background, and experience with older adults. Integrating ageism awareness into physiotherapy curricula and training is recommended.
