Enhancing risk prediction with Bayesian hierarchical frailty models in Stan
Abstract
.Survival patterns in medical research need statistical models that handle unmeasured variations between individual subjects and group populations. This research produces and tests three sophisticated Bayesian survival models, namely Type I half logistic-exponential Cox and exponential Cox and Nadarajah-Haghighi Cox, that use individual-level gamma frailty and group-level Gaussian shared frailties to analyze patient survival variation. The models get their parameter estimates through Stan, which provides a streamlined probabilistic programming model. Efficient Bayesian inference emerges from the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm used in Stan. The proposed analytical method enables better parameter estimation with improved posterior assessment, which produces trustworthy analytical results. We execute the kidney data set prediction through posterior predictive checks and LOOIC and WAIC criteria, which demonstrate how well each model predicts survival outcomes.
