Abstract

This study examines how digital pathways of culture, specifically technoscape and mediascape, reshape Osing cultural identity in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, within platformized digital environments. Drawing on digital ethnography, critical discourse analysis, and visual content analysis, the research analyzes digital artifacts from TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and online media, triangulated with interviews involving cultural practitioners, digital creators, and community members. The findings demonstrate that digital platforms function not merely as channels of representation but as algorithmically governed infrastructures that shape cultural visibility, narrative authority, and aesthetic norms. Osing cultural practices are selectively reformatted to align with platform logics of engagement, resulting in processes of reinterpretation, hybridity, and contestation. The study advances three key theoretical contributions: algorithmic heritage mediation, digital scape hybridity, and glocalized technocultural negotiation. By extending Appadurai’s scape framework to account for platform governance and algorithmic power, this article contributes to broader debates on digital culture, globalization, and the mediation of minority identities in Southeast Asia.
