Abstract

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 added to the list of crises faced by the EU in the last two decades. However, its impact, when combined with the rise of China, the return of President Trump for a second term and other international developments in multi-polarity, has created new geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges for the European Union (EU). An emerging literature is beginning to get to grips with the implications for the EU and Europe more broadly defined, including for defence, strategic autonomy, enlargement policy and other policy issues.
