The New Shadows Cast by Mary Main’s Crossing of Intellectual Traditions: Convergences and Divergences with Psychoanalytic Theory
Abstract
Using Mary Main’s previously unpublished paper Attachment and psychoanalysis: Implications for the hermeneutic controversy in psycho-analysis as a back-drop, we examine Main’s theoretical and methodological contributions through an often-overlooked lens: her movements across seemingly contrary epistemological traditions. While Main and colleagues’ Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) system is frequently celebrated as bridging attachment theory and psychoanalysis, her actual position reveals a more complex stance. Three key tensions illuminate Main’s approach: her focus on narrative form over mental content, her instrumental use of hermeneutic, qualititative methodology to arrive at quantitative prediction of external events; and her combination of idiographic appreciation for unique cases with nomothetic generalization. These movements across epistemological traditions generated both profound insights and notable challenges, including baroque coding systems and what we view as somewhat idealized conceptions of security/autonomy.
