Integration of Internet of Things in healthcare systems: Architecture, attacks, and security approaches
Abstract
IoMT is commonly referred to as the Internet of Medical Things, and its integration into healthcare systems has significantly improved medical data acquisition, patient monitoring, and healthcare service delivery. However, with medical devices becoming more connected with one another, it exposes healthcare infrastructures to a wide range of security threats and cyberattacks. First, the paper gives a comprehensive overview of IoMT systems by presenting their architectural design. Then, it identifies the key security threats that impact IoMT systems over the entire data lifecycle. In addition, the paper presents an analysis on existing security solutions specifically designed for IoMT environments. Next, a literature review of best practice is presented, including related literature on traditional intrusion detection systems and what is done to ensure secure operations. Most importantly, the paper presents the main results and highlights trends for future research aimed at increasing security as well as resilience of IoMT enabled healthcare systems.
