Abstract

The growth of nonstandard forms of employment (NSE) around the world has given the workforce market both opportunities and challenges. Businesses, employees, and the economy are all impacted by new work arrangements in both positive and negative ways. Gig workers enjoy flexibility and operate independently of traditional full-time employment, but they sometimes lack access to benefits like healthcare, insurance, retirement plans, and job security. Within and between regions, level of nonstandard employment penetration varies greatly. This is partly explained by factors like the working environment, labor legislation, and policy environment. Policies pertaining to gig workers’ employment differ greatly across the globe. Current labor regulations in many nations might not sufficiently address the difficulties that gig workers confront, making them vulnerable to exploitation. The challenges of gig employment regarding labor laws, social protections, and economic inequality are examined in this study along with the areas that require attention and the future policies to improve the economic standing of gig workers. The study would be beneficial for the policy interventions to help the gig work flourish as a new economic engine.
