Abstract

This paper fills a gap in the scholarship on La batelera de Pasajes, a play by Bretón de los Herreros, through an analysis of the music written by Ramón Carnicer for its premiere on January 13, 1842. It consists of a single work for female choir, harp, and flute, performed three times during the first act. Its musical language combines popular Basque motifs with operatic elements drawn from the bel canto tradition, reflecting the composer’s distinctive style. This piece takes on different meanings and dramatic roles with each recurrence.
