Abstract

The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the key features of interventions and approaches that involve parents of children young people (CYP) with anxiety and school attendance difficulties. This review followed PRISMA guidelines; three databases were searched in December 2024 for empirical studies published since 2010 and eleven studies fulfiled inclusion criteria and were assessed for quality and relevance. Inclusion criteria focused on terms relating to parental involvement, interventions, school attendance and empirical research after 2010. A narrative synthesis of the papers reflected varying conceptualisations of attendance and the heterogeneity of family needs. Key components of interventions include the importance of collaboration between CYP, families, education staff and professionals, and adopting a holistic approach to address the wider needs of CYP and their families beyond education. Further practical and research implications are discussed.
