The first Dysmorphoptilidae from NE China: evidence based on the reclassification of Prosbolopsites granulatus Hong & Chang, 1993 from Upper Triassic Luoquanzhan Formation of Heilongjiang Province
Abstract
The hemipteran species Prosbolopsites granulatus (Hong & Chang, 1993) was originally assigned to the family ‘Boscarterellidae’ (misspelling of Eoscarterellidae) from the Upper Triassic Luoquanzhan Formation in Luoquanzhan Town, Dongning City, Heilongjiang Province, NE China. Re-study of its holotype herein indicates that this species should be transferred to the family Dysmorphoptilidae (Cicadomorpha) based on the following morphological characters: tegmen punctuated; anterior margin strongly emarginated, veins RA and MP most probably 2-branched; vein RP single; row of contrasting lobes or tubercles or swellings along posterior margin of clavus; and irregular patches present. And a new genus Dongningus Zhang Q. Ning & Zhang H. gen. nov. is further established and a new combination Dongningus granulatus Zhang Q. Ning & Zhang H. comb. nov. is proposed. It marks the first confirmed dysmorphoptilid in NE China, and its type locality was the northernmost site for Dysmorphoptilidae known in the Triassic. This discovery, together with previous records of this family, indicates that the Dysmorphoptilidae exhibited a latitudinally belt-like distribution in both northern and southern hemispheres during the Triassic.
