More Than Just Money? Understanding Generation Renewal Among Small-Scale and Large-Scale Fishers
Abstract
This study explores the factors influencing Croatian fishers’ decisions to stay in or leave the profession, a key issue for generational renewal in fisheries. Analyzing data from 191 small-scale (SSF) and large-scale (LSF) fishers, it applies the Pollnac and Poggie framework, supplemented by economic, environmental, and institutional trust variables, to analyze motivations for staying or leaving. Results show that while income is a key factor for both groups, SSF fishers also prioritize self-actualization, environmental concerns, and trust in regulations. LSF fishers, however, are mainly driven by economic factors. These findings highlight sectoral differences in workforce retention, emphasizing the need for tailored policies to support sustainable fisheries management and recruitment. The study contributes to discussions on labor dynamics in fisheries and provides insights for policies ensuring the sector’s long-term viability.
