Abstract

This paper examines Baby Reindeer (2024), a semi-autobiographical Netflix series, as a trauma narrative that challenges dominant understandings of male victimhood, coercive relationships, and public disclosure. Drawing on narrative inquiry, trauma theory, and systemic therapy, the analysis explores how Donny’s fragmented narration reflects shame, memory disruption, and emotional vulnerability. Trauma bonding is conceptualized as a dynamic process shaped by emotional intensity, coercion, and unmet relational needs. The paper further examines how gendered norms and systemic failures silence male survivors, complicate disclosure, disrupt intimacy, and raise ethical tensions surrounding public trauma storytelling.
