Abstract

Natural fiber reinforced biocomposites are employed in almost all fields of engineering, posing a highly positive impact on the environment and sustainability. Plants like jute, hemp, cotton, coconut, pineapple, and bamboo are great options for natural cellulosic fibers as a sustainable resource for the production of natural fiber reinforced composite eco-friendly products. Selection of proper natural fibers for reinforcement in biocomposites with respect to a particular application is still challenging and is the need of the hour. Selection of the natural fiber depends on its chemical properties, particularly, cellulose composition. A review is carried out on the composition of various natural fibers, their chemical properties, and the impact of cellulose composition by various surface modification techniques to support engineering applications.
