Around the Grounds: The Origins of Australian Rules Football Radio Broadcasts, 1925–1939
Abstract
Live Australian Rules football radio broadcasts began in September 1925. One hundred years on, radio broadcasts of football matches are an accepted part of the fabric of the game. That was not the case in the opening decade and a half of broadcasts on the new medium that radio was. Football broadcasts had to compete with other entertainments for airtime. While football supporters embraced the new service, some football administrators and club officials believed live descriptions of matches had a negative effect on attendances and gate receipts and so initially resisted the broadcasts.
