Abstract

Owing to the high uncertainty and multiple influencing factors associated with radical innovation, this study introduces the concept of ‘creative tension’ to enhance understanding of the radical innovation process. It is proposed that an increase in creative tension can facilitate the realisation of radical innovation, with a comprehensive analysis conducted from multiple perspectives. First, the mechanism by which creative tension drives product radical innovation is examined. Subsequently, an interaction model incorporating key influencing factors of radical innovation (‘Market-Technology-Knowledge’) is constructed. Based on this model, creative tension is refined, defined, and analyzed. Strategies for strengthening different types of creative tensions are then proposed, followed by the development of a process model illustrating the role of creative tension in achieving product radical innovation. Finally, the model’s effectiveness is validated through a case study on the innovative design of a wind turbine blade forming mold.
