Abstract

Many analyses of Trump’s victories in 2016 and 2024 leave gender aside, stressing instead economic or racial issues. By studying two different political objects, Hillary Clinton’s post-mortem book What Happened (2017) and the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee in 2024, this paper will show the central role gender actually played in Trump’s two presidential victories. While Clinton admits she never adequately managed the gender issue during her historical presidential campaign, Trump successfully used the RNC in 2024 to communicate to voters, especially white women, a distinctly masculinist vision that proved instrumental to send him back to the White House.
