Limitations we can’t always overcome: experiences of healthcare professionals and interpreters providing inpatient care for stroke survivors with aphasia from diverse backgrounds
Abstract
PURPOSE: This study described the experiences of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and professional interpreters providing care to people with post-stroke aphasia from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. The study also explored perceived processes and contextual factors shaping assessment, intervention and hospital outcomes for patients from CALD backgrounds and opportunities for practice change. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HCPs and interpreters involved in the care of people with aphasia from CALD backgrounds were recruited from a health service in Australia using a maximum variation sampling approach. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted, transcribed verbatim and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Overarching themes representing both groups' perspectives were generated. RESULTS: Fourteen participants (10 HCPs and four interpreters) highlighted how the interplay of language, culture, and personal factors creates complexity in the care of this patient group. Participants reported challenges in adapting interpreter services, time constraints, and managing family involvement; influenced care quality, contributing to perceived slower progress, poorer outcomes and patient frustration and voicelessness. CONCLUSIONS: HCPs and interpreters reported challenges in providing equitable inpatient care for people with aphasia from CALD backgrounds. Providing appropriate and person-centred care requires addressing systemic barriers, including resource and time constraints.
