Abstract

Members of the Roma ethnic community in Montenegro face challenges in the process of economic and social inclusion. From their first arrival in Montenegro during the Ottoman period, Roma were associated with certain low-status jobs and were largely excluded from the formal economy. This article provides a chronological account of the Roma ethno-economy, which prevails to this day, despite measures taken during the socialist and postsocialist period to encourage integration. A better understanding of the Roma ethno-economy will contribute to better policies with regard to the integration of the Roma community.
