Experimental study on energy dissipation in hydraulic jump downstream of hydraulic structures with sluice gate
Abstract
One efficient method of dissipating energy is the hydraulic jump. This study experimentally investigates the energy dissipation efficiency of hydraulic jumps downstream of sluice gates using solid cylinders with varying diameters and heights. The effect of changing the height and diameter of a solid cylinder on energy dissipation was studied to get the hydraulic jump’s lowest length and maximum energy dissipation. The results demonstrate that relative total energy dissipation (ΔEtEu) is directly proportional to the initial Froude number and inversely proportional to the upstream Froude number and the sequent Froude number. Results show that energy dissipation increases with the presence of cylinders, particularly at a relative diameter (D/Lo) = 0.67 and a relative height (H/a) = 1.80. When a hydraulic jump occurs, the increase in H/a leads to a decrease in the total relative energy dissipation.
