Dynamic LOD generation method for 3D geological models based on geological structural geometry features
Abstract
Three-dimensional geological models are widely used in fields such as geological surveys, urban underground space development, and smart city construction. To address the issues of local geometric feature loss and triangle deficiency in existing mesh simplification algorithms for generating Level of Detail (LOD) models from large-scale geological data, a dynamic LOD generation method for 3D geological models based on geometric features of geological structures is proposed. Supported by graph segmentation, the method dynamically partitions geological clusters by considering factors such as spatial distance, normal vector differences, and stratigraphic codes. By further analyzing the geometric features of geological models, mesh vertices are classified, and simplification rules are constructed based on geological vertex saliency and angular error. Experimental results show that, compared with the traditional Quadric Error Metrics (QEM) algorithm and its improved variants, the proposed method effectively preserves geological edges and stratum pinch-outs, while improving mesh quality and achieving visual fidelity.
