Parametric Investigation of Inconel 800 surface modification using EDC
Abstract
This study examines the utilization of (EDC) process for the enhancement of Inconel 800 surface properties by employing powder compact electrode consisting of 75% tungsten and 25% copper by weight. The research examines the impact of process variables specifically compact load (CL), peak current (Ip) and pulse on-time (Ton) on key responses such as tool wear rate (TWR), material transfer rate (MTR) and surface roughness (Ra). Coated specimens are examined to analyze the deposition quality and surface attributes. The analysis is performed based on Taguchi L9 orthogonal array. The optimum results indicated that the combination of a high CL (15ton), low Ip ;(3A) and short duration of Ton ;(400 µs) yields the minimum TWR of 72.96 mg/min, accompanied by an MTR of 24.15 mg/min and minimum Ra of 3.10 µm using overall evaluation criteria based on priority. Surface characterizations confirm the effective transfer of tool materials to the workpiece, providing detailed information on the elemental composition of the coating.
