Abstract

Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) adaptation involves the use of various GUI designs for the same system, each tailored to best suit specific user characteristics. For that, this article proposes a set of GUI customizations that allow a system to dynamically adjust its design according to the characteristics of the individual user. These customizations and when to apply was extracted from a Targeted Literature Review based on a corpus of 52 references and validated through an experiment assessing the efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience of the GUI customizations compared to regular versions. The experiment involved 47 participants who completed 25 tasks across five different scenarios. The experimental data show that the customizations significantly enhance effectiveness, efficiency, and user experience. The set of customizations represent a step forward in providing transparent user-centered interface adjustments.
