Abstract

This paper responds to Danny Gellersen’s “A Peculiar People” by exploring parallel dynamics of visibility and invisibility in analytic embodiment. Drawing on the author’s experiences as a mixed-race Indigenous, gay, former ballet dancer, and tattooed analyst, the paper examines how bodies marked as “peculiar” function in the consulting room. A detailed clinical case illustrates how the analyst’s visible tattoos and fluid gender presentation became resources for therapeutic transformation with a gay patient struggling with rigid gender binaries and disavowed ethnic heritage. The paper traces connections between Mormon peculiarity and Indigenous erasure, between drag performance and ballet discipline, arguing that both create conditions for depersonalization and dissociation. Building on Gellersen’s concept of “erotic non-belonging,” the author proposes “peculiar practice,” analytic work that acknowledges the analyst’s body as inscribed with histories, desires, and cultural markings that cannot be bracketed. The paper challenges psychoanalysis’s investment in the fiction of the neutral therapeutic body, suggesting that the analyst peculiarity can generate rather than impede therapeutic possibility. Clinical material demonstrates how tattoos function as transitional and transformational objects, enabling patients to explore questions of authenticity, permanence, and the courage required for visible non-conformity. The conclusion advocates for “analytic sparkle,” visibility that honors both therapeutic boundaries and the embodied realities analysts bring to clinical encounters.
