In Support of the Continued Role of Libraries in Digital Literacy
Abstract
Libraries have long been central to literacy development, which traditionally emphasize reading and writing skills. The twenty first century demands a broader spectrum of literacies, including digital, media, and information literacy, to enable individuals to participate fully in society and the workforce. This article explores the evolution of digital literacy as a concept, tracing its origins and examining the myth of digital natives. It provides exemplar definitions and key frameworks that inform practice today. It argues for a pluralistic understanding of digital literacy that encompasses technical, cognitive, and socio-emotional skills. By situating libraries as critical partners in advancing these literacies, the article provides practical questions to guide local implementation.
