Empowering Communities through Pop-Up Exhibitions: A Case Study of the Portal to Al Zubarah Pop-Up Exhibition in Qatar
Abstract
This article examines Portal to Al Zubarah: Step into a Historic Coastal Town, a Qatar Museums initiative that used a pop-up exhibition, defined as a small-scale mobile exhibition, to engage the local community with the UNESCO-inscribed World Heritage Site of Al Zubarah. Visitor questionnaires, interviews, and internal peer review were used to investigate how pop-ups can facilitate inclusive design, amplify underrepresented voices, and strengthen institutional–community collaboration. The findings revealed that pop-up exhibitions can serve as tools for participatory heritage interpretation and institutional learning.
