The Marxist educational logic of the seminar
Abstract
This article argues for the primacy of the seminar in theorizing Marxist educational practices. To do so, it turns to the writings of Fredric Jameson, especially two late transcripts of his seminars at Duke University. In particular, the seminar emerges as a unique educational space and time for a quasi-public rehearsal of thinking dialectically with an intergenerational audience of students. This interpretation of the seminar is supplemented with Jameson’s analysis of the educational logic of Bertolt Brecht’s learning plays and reflections on the intergenerational nature of the “waves” of education provided by Walter Benjamin.
