Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the current state of green human resource management practices in selected Ethiopian public sector organizations, and the effects of these practices on organizational sustainability. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combined quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with 301 participants. The findings indicated that effective leadership positively enhances the impact of green human resource management initiatives on sustainability outcomes. Specifically, transformational leadership was found to strengthen employee engagement and commitment to sustainability goals, thereby amplifying the beneficial effects of green human resource management practices on resource efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental compliance. These insights provide important implications for policymakers, public sector human resource practitioners, and organizational leaders in Ethiopia and other developing contexts, suggesting that fostering transformational leadership can significantly improve the effectiveness of green human resource management practices in promoting organizational sustainability.
