Generative AI and decision autonomy: a framework of psychological and structural empowerment
Abstract
The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into organizational processes raises a critical question: Does GenAI support empowerment and decision-making or does it impose new constraints on individuals’ motivations and decisions autonomy? Drawing on psychological and technological perspectives, this study develops a framework that integrates structural and psychological empowerment to analyze the mechanisms through which GenAI directly or indirectly impacts individuals’ decision autonomy, judgement and outcomes. Our study is based on a systematic review, identifying six different themes, including enablement, amplification, constraints, performance anxiety, trust and equity, explaining the mechanisms through which GenAI supports or constrains empowerment decision-making processes. Utilizing thematic analysis, this study formulates six propositions for future scholarships, addressing which can enrich developing literature on GenAI and its role in decision empowerment. This study extends empowerment theory to decision-making in technological environments, contributing to psychological research.
