The optimal data patent protection in a semi-endogenous growth model with R&D
Abstract
This paper studies the optimal data patent breadth to maximize social welfare in a semi-endogenous growth general equilibrium model. We find that, first, in the decentralized equilibrium, the economic growth rate and social welfare increase when the data patent breadth decreases under our calibration. Second, it is better to allocate data property rights to firms than to households. Third, the government can adjust the decentralized equilibrium to Pareto optimality by subsidizing data purchase and the wage of R&D labour.
