Abstract

The article presents an empirical research on the dynamics of national pride in China from the early 1990s to the present. The research results show the trajectory of this dynamics to be nonlinear. The increase in the level of national pride is revealed to be accompanied with a much less obvious increased uniformity in the strength of national pride across various social strata. These findings contribute to the understanding of the relation between national pride and a country’s performance and the ways quantitative methods can provide insights into substantive characteristics of national identity.
