Abstract

The October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks exposed critical vulnerabilities in the spatial design of Israeli kibbutzim, where openness and communal planning became security liabilities. This study asks: how can kibbutz architecture be redesigned to integrate robust defensive measures against terroristic and military threats while preserving its communal identity? Through event analyses, spatial assessments, and comparative architectural review, the paper examines failures in perimeter security, access control, and shelter design. It proposes architectural interventions including fortified perimeters, controlled access systems, decentralized community hubs, and enhanced safe rooms. These recommendations balance cultural preservation with pragmatic defense, positioning kibbutzim as prototypes for resilient, security-integrated community design in post-conflict environments. The study ultimately argues that architecture must reconcile openness and protection to ensure both physical safety and the continuity of communal life.
