Private developments, public edges: intermediary spaces and privately-owned public spaces in urban megaprojects in Bangkok
Abstract
This study investigates how contemporary privately owned public spaces and intermediary spaces located within Bangkok’s recent urban megaprojects redefine the relationships between public and private realms at various scales. Drawing on fieldwork, mapping and secondary sources, the research highlights how in two case studies these spaces reconfigure public access of the sites, urban texture, green space-related conceptions and understandings of the public realm. The study offers new insights into the role of intermediary spaces in renovating conceptions and experiences of public and private spaces in the evolving context of a megacity in Southeast Asia and in other relatable contexts.
