Life-Cycle Seismic Reliability Assessment of Buried Corroded Steel Pipeline
Abstract
Buried pipelines are susceptible to corrosion over extended service periods and remain vulnerable to earthquake loading. This study formulates a nonlinear Winkler foundation-beam finite element model and carries out Monte Carlo analyses to quantify the seismic reliability of buried pipelines subjected to corrosion-induced degradation. The results indicate under the same site condition, corroded older pipelines exhibit higher sensitivity of seismic reliability to PGA increases. Seismic damage in soft soil sites under lower PGA can exceed that in medium-hard soil sites under higher PGA. And this study proposes an optimal replacement strategy to maximize the overall reliability improvement of pipelines.
