Abstract

Conventional probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) framework does not explicitly include near-field phenomena, which can lead to a substantial underestimation of seismic demand. To address this gap, the current study presents a comprehensive PSHA for the entire Indian subcontinent and for 270 major cities, incorporating near-field directivity effects through a logic tree-based framework. Substantial regional variability in the near-field amplification factor is observed, with amplification exceeding code-specified partial safety factor of 1.5 in high seismic zones. A simplified parametric model is proposed to account for near-field effects into the conventional PSHA studies in India and current Indian seismic design standard.
